Detailed description of Wil-Mar Golf Club

Wil-Mar Golf Club is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Wil-Mar Golf Club first opened for play in 1961. The course was designed by Gene Hamm.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,031 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,693 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 12, a par-5 that plays to 574 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 163 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 16, a 559 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 6, a 339 yard par-4.

This rolling course is difficult because there are several natural hazards throughout its design, including water hazards that come into play on seven holes. Wil-Mar's spacious front nine and tree lined back nine offer a challenge to all levels of golfers. The golf course starts out playing across wide-open, spacious meadows before becoming much more wooded on the back nine where mature trees line the fairways. With several doglegs, sloping fairways and well-protected, tiered greens, accuracy and ball placement are critical.

Wil-Mar's original nine holes opened in 1961 when landowners William (Bill) and Mary Allen converted part of the family's tobacco farm into a golf course. In 1977, Mrs. Allen and her children expanded the course to an 18-hole layout. The course name, Wil-Mar, is a combination of "William" and Allen's wife's name, "Mary."

The course is still owned and operated by the Allen children, Marty Allen and his sister and LPGA teaching professional Fran Wilkerson. The family atmosphere combined with a professionally ran golf course mixes nicely and creates a delightful mix.

Decent course, but at only $25 for all day play it is a must play if in the area. Staff is the friendliest of any course I have ever played. Typical Gene Hamm course, meaning shorter without too much challenge, but enough to make it enjoyable. Price and staff friendliness are enough reason to play here; two of the reasons I play here nearly every week.

Fairways and greens were well manicured. Greens were on the slow side. Like so many courses in the area, some of the non-playing areas of the course need some maintenance/repair/replacement. I've played 19 different courses in the last 90 days. This one is not rated as well as many others in the area, but it was as good as I've ever seen it.

The course was on the verge of being sold a couple of times but they fell through. They have just invested in all new riding carts. The greens are in good shape some of them have different grasses on them so a little bumpy on holes 3, 8 and 10 but overall looks good.
